For LCSW Supervisors
Clinical Supervision Software for LCSW Supervisors
If you're an LCSW-S, LCSW supervisor, or licensed clinical social worker providing supervision to MSW graduates working toward clinical licensure, Guidara is built for your workflow. Here's how it handles the specific requirements of social work supervision.
Social Work Supervision at a Glance
LCSW supervision guides Licensed Master Social Workers (LMSWs, LSWs, or equivalent pre-clinical designations depending on the state) through the post-graduate supervised clinical experience required for clinical licensure. In most states that means 3,000 hours over at least two years. Some states ask for more: 3,500 hours in Massachusetts and Oregon, and 4,000 in Arkansas, Michigan and Minnesota. New York counts 2,000 hours of client contact over at least 36 months.
Many social work boards ask for more than an hour count: a written supervision plan, periodic evaluations, and verification forms in the board's own format. Keeping all of this organized across a multi-year supervision relationship takes a system, not a folder of spreadsheets.
What LCSW Supervisors Need from Software
Detailed Hour Tracking
Social work boards count supervised experience hours and supervision hours, and some split experience into direct client contact and indirect clinical hours. A few also set a subcategory minimum. California, for example, wants at least 750 hours of face-to-face psychotherapy within the total. Guidara's structured timesheets keep direct, indirect, and individual and group supervision hours in separate columns, compute running totals, and maintain a permanent record of every entry.
Your supervisee logs hours, you review and approve, both parties sign. The system handles the math. When it's time to complete your board's verification form (in Texas, the Clinical Supervision Verification Form for LCSW), the totals are already computed and organized.
Supervision Plans
Several social work boards require a written supervision plan, often on the board's own form. Guidara lets you create supervision plans with goals, competency areas, evaluation methods, and topic coverage. Both parties sign the plan, and it's stored as part of the Electronic Supervision Record.
Documentation That Meets Board Expectations
Social work boards take documentation seriously. Supervision notes should capture topics covered, clinical cases discussed, ethical issues addressed, and feedback provided. Guidara's structured notes create consistent records that demonstrate substantive supervision over time.
Evaluations
Many social work boards require periodic written evaluations of the supervisee, such as quarterly in Pennsylvania or every six months in Minnesota, and often a final one. Guidara's goal tracking links competency areas to supervision discussions, so when it's time to write an evaluation, you have a documented history of the supervisee's development to reference.
How Guidara Handles Social Work Supervision
Multi-Year Record Keeping
LCSW supervision lasts at least two years in most states, and often longer. That's a long time to keep records organized. Guidara maintains the complete supervision history in one platform: every meeting, every timesheet, every signed document, from the first day to the last. Nothing gets lost when you change laptops, email providers, or filing systems.
Board-Ready Exports
When your supervisee is ready to apply for clinical licensure, Guidara exports organized PDFs with hour summaries, supervision records, and signed documentation. Many boards require the supervisor to complete a verification form attesting to the supervisee's hours, and some ask about competence too. Guidara's records give you the accurate totals you need to complete that form confidently.
Multiple Supervisees Across License Types
If you supervise both MSW graduates working toward LCSW and counseling associates working toward LPC, Guidara manages them all from one dashboard. Each supervisee has their own record, with their own license details, timesheets, and documentation. You don't need separate tracking systems for different boards.
NASW Code of Ethics Alignment
The NASW Code of Ethics (standard 3.01) asks supervisors to supervise only within their competence, set clear boundaries, and evaluate supervisees fairly and respectfully. Guidara's structured documentation gives you a record of how you met those standards. Every documented meeting, every signed timesheet, and every tracked goal shows that supervision was intentional and thorough.
Common LCSW Supervisor Designations by State
- Texas: LCSW-S (Licensed Clinical Social Worker-Supervisor)
- California: No separate designation. The supervisor meets BBS rules (licensed 2 of the past 5 years, 15 hours of supervision training), and at least 1,700 hours must be under an LCSW
- New York: No supervisor credential. A New York LCSW, a psychologist qualified in psychotherapy, or a board-certified psychiatrist can supervise; the regulations set no minimum years of licensure
- Florida: Qualified Supervisor (QS) status, approved by the Board and added to the existing license
- Illinois: Any LCSW. There is no supervisor designation and no board approval of supervisors, and only LCSW-supervised experience counts
Regardless of your state's specific designation, if you're providing clinical social work supervision, Guidara handles the workflow. Check our state-by-state requirements for your state's specific rules.
