Licensing Board Overview

North Carolina has separate licensing boards for different mental health professions. The North Carolina Social Work Certification and Licensure Board oversees social work licenses. The North Carolina Board of Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselors (NCBLCMHC) regulates licensed clinical mental health counselors. The North Carolina Marriage and Family Therapy Licensure Board governs LMFT licenses. Each board establishes its own requirements for supervised experience, supervisor qualifications, and documentation standards.

Supervised Experience Requirements

  • Provisional licensure: North Carolina uses a Licensed Clinical Social Work Associate (LCSWA) designation during the supervised experience period

  • Must hold an active North Carolina LMFT license
  • AAMFT Approved Supervisor designation is typically recognized or required
  • Must meet board requirements for supervisor training and post-licensure experience

General Documentation Requirements

North Carolina licensing boards expect organized, detailed documentation of supervised clinical experience. Supervisors and supervisees should maintain:

  • Written supervision agreement or contract executed before supervision begins
  • Meeting-by-meeting supervision documentation including date, duration, modality (individual/group), and topics discussed
  • Hour tracking logs with breakdowns by category (direct client contact, individual supervision, group supervision, indirect hours)
  • Supervisor verification forms confirming hours completed and supervisee competency
  • Records of formal evaluations, performance feedback, and any remediation plans

Both the supervisor and supervisee should retain copies of all documentation. Digital records with timestamps and signatures provide the strongest evidence during board review or audit.

Virtual Supervision in North Carolina

North Carolina has generally supported telehealth and virtual supervision. Supervision conducted via HIPAA-compliant video conferencing platforms is typically accepted, though specific boards may have additional requirements regarding modality, frequency, or initial in-person meeting expectations. Supervisors should verify current board guidance before relying exclusively on virtual supervision.

How to Become a Clinical Supervisor in North Carolina

North Carolina has three separate boards that regulate mental health supervision, each with its own supervisor requirements. Always verify current standards directly with the relevant board before applying.

Becoming an LCMHCS (NC Board of Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselors)

The NCBLCMHC uses a three-tier licensing system: LCMHCA (associate), LCMHC (full licensure), and LCMHCS (supervisor). The LCMHCS is a separate license tier, not just an endorsement.

  • Licensure: Must hold an active North Carolina LCMHC license in good standing
  • Clinical experience: A minimum of 5 years of full-time clinical experience plus 2,500 direct client contact hours, per N.C.G.S. §90-336
  • Supervision training: Must complete either 3 graduate semester hours in a supervision course or 45 continuing education contact hours in clinical supervision. Training must cover supervision models, ethics, evaluation, and cultural competence
  • Jurisprudence exam: Must pass a jurisprudence examination covering NCBLCMHC rules and regulations
  • Application and fees: Must apply for the LCMHCS license specifically. The application fee is $238
  • Renewal: LCMHCS holders must complete 10 continuing education hours in supervision topics each 2-year renewal cycle

Becoming an LCSW Supervisor (NC Social Work Certification and Licensure Board)

The NC Social Work Board oversees clinical social work supervision.

  • Licensure: Must hold an active North Carolina LCSW license in good standing
  • Clinical experience: A minimum of 2 years of post-licensure clinical social work experience
  • Supervision training: The NC Social Work Board does not currently require a specific number of supervisor training hours. Formal supervision training is recommended but not mandated
  • Registration: The supervisory arrangement and plan must be registered with the board. The board maintains a voluntary supervisor roster

Becoming an LMFT Supervisor (NC Marriage and Family Therapy Licensure Board)

The NC MFT Board oversees marriage and family therapy supervision.

  • Licensure: Must hold an active North Carolina LMFT license in good standing
  • AAMFT Approved Supervisor required: North Carolina defers entirely to the AAMFT credential for MFT supervision. You must hold the AAMFT Approved Supervisor designation (or be an AAMFT Approved Supervisor Candidate working under a mentor) to supervise LMFT associates
  • AAMFT requirements: The AAMFT Approved Supervisor pathway requires completion of a 30-hour Fundamentals of Clinical Supervision course, 36 months of mentored supervision experience, and a mentoring agreement with an existing AAMFT Approved Supervisor

Cross-Discipline Supervision in North Carolina

Because three separate boards regulate the three disciplines, cross-discipline rules vary. In general, the supervisor must hold the same license type the supervisee is pursuing. Check with the specific board for current policies.

Tip: If you're ready to start supervising, setting up your documentation system before you take on your first supervisee saves time later. See our guide on how to start offering clinical supervision.
