Supervision Hours & Documentation
- Supervision hours generally include individual supervision (one-on-one with your supervisor), group supervision (meeting with a supervisor and other supervisees), and in some cases, live observation. The specific definition varies by licensing board and state. Administrative tasks like scheduling and email typically do not count.
- Requirements vary by license type and state. LCSW typically requires 3,000–4,000 total supervised hours; LPC typically requires 2,000–3,000 hours; LMFT often requires 3,000+ hours. Direct supervision hour minimums (face-to-face with your supervisor) are usually 100–200 hours. Always verify with your specific licensing board.
- Most licensing boards now accept virtual supervision via HIPAA-compliant video platforms. Some states have limitations on the percentage of supervision that can occur virtually, and a few still require initial in-person meetings. Check your board's current policy.
- While retention requirements vary by state, best practice is to retain supervision records for a minimum of 10 years, or indefinitely if possible. Supervisees may need to produce records years or even decades later when applying for licensure in new states.
- This depends on both states involved. Some boards allow interstate supervision, while others require the supervisor to be licensed in the state where the supervisee practices. Always verify with both states' licensing boards before beginning cross-state supervision.
