Utah-Specific Details

W-2 Employment Requirement

Utah generally requires that individuals accruing hours toward clinical licensure be W-2 employees of the agency or practice where they are providing services, rather than 1099 independent contractors.

Associate Licenses

Utah requires counseling and MFT candidates to obtain an associate license (ACMHC or AMFT) before beginning to accrue supervised experience hours. Social workers must hold a CSW.

Virtual Supervision in Utah

Utah DOPL generally permits telehealth supervision, provided it occurs via secure, HIPAA-compliant, two-way interactive video. Supervisors should verify current board guidance on any limitations related to the percentage of supervision that can be conducted virtually versus in-person.
