Iowa-Specific Details

Temporary Licensure

Iowa requires counseling and MFT candidates to obtain a temporary license (tLMHC or tLMFT) before beginning to accrue supervised experience hours. Social workers must hold an LMSW. Hours accrued prior to holding the appropriate credential and having an approved supervision plan will not count toward full licensure.

Supervision Plan Approval

A formal supervision plan must be submitted to and approved by the respective board before the supervised experience begins. Any changes to the supervisor or the plan must also be submitted for approval.

Virtual Supervision in Iowa

Iowa boards generally permit telehealth supervision, provided it occurs via secure, HIPAA-compliant, two-way interactive video. Supervisors should verify current board guidance on any limitations related to the percentage of supervision that can be conducted virtually versus in-person.
