Nebraska-Specific Details
Provisional Licensure
Nebraska utilizes a provisional licensure system (PCMSW for social workers, PLMHP for counselors and MFTs). Candidates must hold these credentials before they can begin accruing hours toward independent clinical licensure.
LIMHP vs. LMHP
Nebraska has a two-tiered system for mental health practitioners: Licensed Mental Health Practitioner (LMHP) and Licensed Independent Mental Health Practitioner (LIMHP). The LIMHP allows for independent practice and diagnosis of major mental illnesses, requiring specific supervised experience and examination.
Virtual Supervision in Nebraska
Nebraska generally permits telehealth supervision, provided it occurs via secure, HIPAA-compliant, two-way interactive video. Supervisors should verify current board guidance on any limitations related to the percentage of supervision that can be conducted virtually versus in-person.
