Supervision Agenda Template

A structured supervision agenda keeps supervision meetings focused, productive, and consistent. Use this template to make the most of your supervision time and ensure important topics are never overlooked.

Why Use a Supervision Agenda

Supervision time is limited. Most meetings are 60 minutes or less. Without an agenda, supervision meetings can drift toward whatever feels most urgent, leaving important clinical development, administrative tasks, and long-term goals unaddressed.

A consistent agenda ensures that every supervision meeting covers essential ground: urgent clinical concerns, ongoing case reviews, skill development, administrative requirements, and professional growth planning. Over time, this structure creates a more developmentally focused supervision experience.

Recommended Supervision Agenda Structure

1. Check-In (5 minutes)

  • Brief personal and professional check-in
  • Review of the supervisee's overall well-being and stress level
  • Quick assessment of any immediate concerns or crises

2. Review of Previous Action Items (5 minutes)

  • Status update on tasks assigned in the previous supervision meeting
  • Follow-up on any pending clinical situations
  • Discussion of any obstacles encountered

3. Urgent Clinical Issues (10-15 minutes)

  • Any crisis situations or high-risk clients
  • Ethical dilemmas requiring immediate guidance
  • Cases requiring supervisor authorization or co-signature
  • Mandated reporting situations

4. Case Presentation and Review (15-20 minutes)

  • Structured case presentation by supervisee
  • Discussion of clinical conceptualization
  • Review of treatment approach and interventions
  • Feedback on clinical documentation
  • Exploration of alternative approaches

5. Skill Development (10 minutes)

  • Review of specific clinical techniques or modalities
  • Discussion of relevant research or readings
  • Role-play or practice of clinical skills
  • Progress toward identified competency goals

6. Administrative and Compliance (5 minutes)

  • Hour tracking status: are we on target?
  • Documentation review and completion
  • Licensing requirements check-in
  • Any continuing education updates

7. Wrap-Up and Action Items (5 minutes)

  • Summarize key takeaways from the supervision meeting
  • Assign specific action items for the next supervision meeting
  • Confirm the date and focus for the next meeting
  • Solicit feedback on the supervision process

Tips for Effective Supervision Agendas

  • Share the agenda in advance. Send the outline to your supervisee before the supervision meeting so they can prepare case presentations and questions.
  • Be flexible. The agenda provides structure, not a rigid script. Adjust time allocations based on what's most pressing.
  • Rotate focus areas. Not every supervision meeting needs to cover every section. Rotate emphasis between case review, skill development, and administration.
  • Track recurring themes. Note patterns across supervision meetings, such as persistent challenges, growth areas, or recurring ethical questions, and address them proactively.
  • Include supervisee input. Ask supervisees to contribute agenda items. This promotes ownership of their development.
  • Document what was covered. After each supervision meeting, note which agenda items were discussed. This feeds into your supervision notes and demonstrates comprehensive supervision.
