Disclaimer: This page is for informational purposes only and reflects requirements as of our last review (Last reviewed: February 2026). Licensing requirements change. Always verify current requirements with the Tennessee Board of Licensed Professional Counselors, Licensed Marital and Family Therapists, and Licensed Clinical Pastoral Therapists or the Tennessee Board of Social Workers before making decisions about your supervision.

Licensing Board Overview

Tennessee splits mental health licensure across two separate boards under the Department of Health. The Board of Licensed Professional Counselors, Licensed Marital and Family Therapists, and Licensed Clinical Pastoral Therapists handles LPC and LMFT licensure. The Board of Social Workers handles LCSW licensure. Each board maintains its own rules, applications, and supervisor registries.

Tennessee uses a two-tier system for professional counselors. The base LPC license does not authorize independent diagnosis or treatment of mental health conditions. To practice as a mental health provider, counselors must earn the LPC-MHSP (Mental Health Service Provider) designation, which requires additional supervised experience beyond the initial LPC.

LPC-MHSP: Licensed Professional Counselor — Mental Health Service Provider

Tennessee's LPC-MHSP is the fully independent counseling credential. The base LPC alone does not authorize mental health diagnosis or treatment. Earning the MHSP designation requires post-master's supervised clinical experience.

Supervised Experience Requirements

  • Total experience: Typically 3,000 hours of post-master's clinical experience (confirm current requirements with your licensing board)
  • Duration: Minimum 2 years
  • Supervision contact hours: 150 hours of direct supervision contact
  • In-state supervisor requirement: At least 75 of the 150 supervision hours must come from a board-approved LPC-MHSP supervisor in Tennessee
  • Education: 60-credit-hour graduate program in counseling required

Supervisor Qualifications

  • Must hold board-approved LPC-MHSP status in Tennessee
  • Additional supervisor training requirements are defined in Rules Chapter 0450
  • At least half of supervision hours must come from a Tennessee-approved LPC-MHSP supervisor

LCSW: Licensed Clinical Social Worker

Tennessee's LCSW is licensed through the Board of Social Workers. You hold an LMSW while accumulating supervised clinical hours toward full LCSW licensure.

Supervised Experience Requirements

  • Total experience: Typically 3,000 hours of post-master's clinical social work experience (confirm current requirements with your licensing board)
  • Duration: Minimum 2 years
  • Supervision: Must be supervised by an approved LCSW or LAPSW supervisor
  • Exam: ASWB Clinical exam required. Applicants receive a letter of approval to sit for the exam after board review.
  • Application timing: LCSW applications must arrive in their entirety at least 30 days before a scheduled board meeting

Supervisor Qualifications

  • Must hold an active LCSW or LAPSW license with approved supervisor status
  • Must be approved by the Tennessee Board of Social Workers
  • Additional qualifications defined in Rules Chapter 1365

LMFT: Licensed Marital and Family Therapist

Tennessee's LMFT is licensed through the same board as LPC. Note that Tennessee uses "Marital" rather than "Marriage" in the title.

Supervised Experience Requirements

  • Duration: Typically 2 years of post-master's supervised experience (confirm current requirements with your licensing board)
  • Education: Master's degree in marriage and family therapy or a related field
  • Supervision: Must be supervised by an approved LMFT supervisor
  • Specific hour breakdowns: Detailed in Rules Chapter 0450-02

Supervisor Qualifications

  • Must be approved by the board
  • Must hold an active LMFT license in Tennessee
  • Supervisor-specific training required per Rules Chapter 0450

Tennessee-Specific Details

Two-Tier LPC System

This is the most distinctive feature of Tennessee's counseling licensure. The base LPC does not allow you to independently diagnose or treat mental health conditions. You need the LPC-MHSP add-on for that. Most counselors pursuing full clinical practice will need to complete the MHSP requirements, which means additional post-master's supervision beyond what some states require for their standard LPC.

Two Separate Boards

Tennessee maintains entirely distinct boards for counselors/MFTs and social workers. They operate under separate rules chapters (0450 for counselors/MFTs and 1365 for social workers), have different meeting schedules, and process applications independently. If you're supervising across disciplines, you'll need to interact with both boards.

Tennessee-Kentucky Reciprocity

Tennessee has a signed reciprocal agreement with Kentucky for counselor licensure. If you hold a Kentucky counseling license, this may simplify the process of getting licensed in Tennessee and vice versa.

LCPT License Type

Tennessee is one of the few states that licenses Clinical Pastoral Therapists (LCPT). This credential falls under the same board as LPC and LMFT. If you're coming from a pastoral counseling background, Tennessee offers a specific licensure path.

LAPSW Designation

Beyond LCSW, Tennessee also offers the Licensed Advanced Practice Social Worker (LAPSW) credential for non-clinical advanced social work practice. This represents a separate track from the clinical LCSW pathway.

Documentation Requirements

  • Supervision verification forms required for all license types
  • Background check required for all new applications
  • LCSW and LAPSW applications must arrive at least 30 days before a scheduled board meeting
  • Board reviews applications at regularly scheduled meetings
  • Keep detailed records of supervision meetings, including dates, duration, and topics discussed

Virtual Supervision in Tennessee

Tennessee does not have a clearly published virtual supervision policy on its board website. A policy document regarding "Clinical Setting for Supervision Hours" exists as a PDF on the PCMFT Board page, but specific virtual allowances are not readily available online. Contact the relevant board directly for the most current guidance on whether virtual or telehealth supervision is accepted toward licensure hours.

How to Become a Clinical Supervisor in Tennessee

Tennessee regulates clinical supervision through two boards: the Board of Licensed Professional Counselors, Licensed Marital and Family Therapists, and Licensed Clinical Pastoral Therapists (PCMFT Board) for LPC-MHSP and LMFT, and the Board of Social Workers for LCSW. Always verify current requirements with the relevant board.

Becoming an LPC-MHSP Supervisor in Tennessee

Per Rule 0450-01-.10, supervisors of LPC/LPC-MHSP candidates must meet the following:

  • Licensure: Must hold an active license as an LPC-MHSP, LMFT, Licensed Clinical Pastoral Therapist, LCSW, Licensed Psychologist with HSP designation, Licensed Senior Psychological Examiner, or Licensed Psychiatrist
  • Experience: Must have been licensed for at least 5 years and be in good standing with the relevant licensing board
  • Supervision training: Must document completion of at least one of the following:
    • A passing grade in a graduate-level academic course specific to supervision of counselors
    • Supervision certification from AAMFT, AAPC, NBCC, or another board-designated organization
    • 12 contact hours related to counseling supervision from an approved professional association or credentialing organization
  • Continuing education: 3 of the 10 required CE clock hours every 2 years must be in counseling supervision or related supervision topics
  • MHSP designation: For candidates pursuing the MHSP designation, at least 75 of the 150 required supervision hours must be provided by a supervisor who holds the LPC-MHSP credential. An LPC without the MHSP designation cannot supervise an MHSP candidate

Becoming an LCSW Supervisor in Tennessee

  • Licensure: Must hold an active Tennessee LCSW license in good standing
  • Clinical experience: Must meet the Board of Social Workers' post-licensure experience requirements (confirm with the board)
  • Supervision training: Must complete board-approved supervisor training
  • Registration: The supervision arrangement typically must be registered with or reported to the Board of Social Workers

Becoming an LMFT Supervisor in Tennessee

  • Licensure: Must hold an active Tennessee LMFT license in good standing
  • Clinical experience: Must meet the PCMFT Board's post-licensure experience requirements
  • Supervision training: Must complete board-approved supervisor training. AAMFT Approved Supervisor designation is commonly accepted
  • Approval: Must apply for and receive approved supervisor status from the PCMFT Board

Tennessee-Specific Considerations

  • LPC-MHSP designation: Tennessee uses the LPC-MHSP credential (not just LPC) for the clinical-level counseling license with independent practice authority
  • Supervisee hour requirements: LPC-MHSP candidates must complete 3,000 hours of direct clinical experience (including 1,500 face-to-face client contact hours) over a minimum of 2 years and no more than 4 years
  • Two boards: Social work and counseling/MFT are regulated by separate boards, so requirements may differ
  • Cross-discipline: The rules allow supervisors from several license types to supervise LPC candidates, but an LPC without MHSP cannot supervise an MHSP candidate. Verify current rules with the applicable board
Tip: If you're ready to start supervising, setting up your documentation system before you take on your first supervisee saves time later. See our guide on how to start offering clinical supervision.
